Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is a useful working label for making a website’s answers clear, accurate and supported. For a small business, that starts with the questions a customer needs answered before calling, booking or asking for a quote—not a separate trick for forcing AI to recommend you.
The practical goal is a better answer on the right page. Whether a search or AI system chooses to show, summarize or cite that page remains outside your control.
How AEO relates to SEO and GEO
These terms overlap. We use them to describe different parts of the work, not three independent ranking engines.
On a narrow screen, scroll the table sideways to read every column.
| Term | Working focus | Useful work |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Discovery and relevance in search. | Make useful public pages accessible, understandable and connected through relevant links. |
| AEO | Answers to customer questions. | Give a direct answer, explain conditions and support important business claims. |
| GEO | Visibility in generative answers. | Observe whether a specific AI surface mentions or cites the business, with recorded dates and limits. |
Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode use ordinary SEO foundations. Eligibility requires an indexed, snippet-eligible page; inclusion is not guaranteed. Special AI files or schema are not required. Google AI search guidance.
An optional file such as llms.txt does not replace readable pages, indexing checks or accurate service information. A question-and-answer format can help a reader, but it is not a guaranteed search feature.
Start with a real customer decision
Choose a few questions your business actually receives. For a service business, useful starting points might concern suitability, what is included, the next step and what needs a person’s confirmation. Use the customer’s words; explain technical terms only when they help.
Match each question to an existing page. An appointment question belongs near the appointment process; a care-scope question belongs near the care offer. A new page needs a different, useful purpose—not just another spelling of the same keyword.
Google’s guidance emphasizes useful, original information and descriptive language. Treat that as a quality test: does this answer help someone make the intended decision? Helpful content guidance, SEO Starter Guide.
Write the answer before adding extra explanation
Begin with the answer, then state the conditions, supporting facts and next action. Do not hide the useful part beneath a long introduction or promise a result your business cannot confirm.
Fictional appointment-business example, not a client result: the question is “Can I book an appointment through your website?” Suppose the business only accepts requests for staff review. A useful answer would say: “You can request an appointment online. It is not confirmed until our team contacts you. Use the request form and tell us the service you need.”
Before using that wording, the actual owner must confirm the process. The form, staff instructions and page should agree. If the business offers instant confirmed booking instead, the answer must reflect that verified system—not copy this example.
The lesson is specific: request and confirmed appointment are different states. Clear answers should preserve that difference, even when a simpler sales claim sounds more attractive.
Check the answer against the business facts
On a narrow screen, scroll the table sideways to read every column.
| Review item | What to check | When to stop and ask the owner |
|---|---|---|
| Service and customer fit | The service is actually offered to this audience at the relevant location or delivery area. | A branch, service or area is inferred rather than confirmed. |
| Scope and price conditions | Inclusions, exclusions and any published price conditions match the agreed offer. | A draft turns a possible add-on into an included service or invents a fixed price. |
| Proof | Material claims have a relevant, authorized source: an approved policy, documented process or genuine work evidence. | A testimonial, credential or outcome cannot be substantiated. |
| Customer action | The named form, phone link or booking destination matches the answer and works within its agreed scope. | A request is presented as confirmed, or the handoff has no responsible person. |
| Review ownership | A named person can correct the answer when the facts change. | No one owns updates or the information is already out of date. |
A model can suggest wording or flag a gap. It cannot create an operating policy, verify an unsupported claim or authorize publication. Keep a human factual review, particularly for prices, availability and consequential customer decisions.
Keep technical checks separate from answer quality
A useful answer cannot help discovery if its public page is inaccessible or unintentionally excluded. Review the intended page’s response, indexing rules, relevant internal links and mobile readability. Keep genuinely private content private; do not remove protection simply to advertise more material.
Ordinary visible text should contain the information the customer needs. Structured data, where appropriate, should agree with that text. Neither a sitemap entry nor a successful page load establishes that a search engine has indexed the page.
This is separate from website upkeep. The maintenance checklist checks the site’s working parts; maintenance versus SEO explains how care and search work differ.
Measure what you can actually observe
Keep the source, date range, pages and comparison method with each result. An unavailable report is unknown, not zero.
Google includes traffic from its AI search features in Search Console’s overall Web reporting. Do not add a second AI total to Web without establishing that the measures do not overlap. Google measurement guidance.
Bing’s AI Performance preview offers citation reporting on supported Microsoft and partner experiences. Its June 2026 additions include intent, topic, citation-share and period-comparison views. These are platform-specific observations, not a universal AI rank or proof of sales. Check what is available in your authorized property rather than assuming every feature or dataset exists for your site. Bing AI visibility update.
If you manually sample an AI answer, record the exact question, tool or surface, date and linked source. A mention is not necessarily a citation; one result is not proof of broad visibility. Repeating a prompt until it mentions you is not a defensible success measure.
Separately record genuine inquiries and their business fit where you have permission and reliable records. A citation, impression or button click does not establish an inquiry or a sale. Comparable before-and-after observations can inform a review, but they do not prove the content change caused the result.
