PLEASANTWORKS GUIDES

Website maintenance versus SEO

Understand what website care, hosting, SEO and new development each cover, so you can compare proposals without paying twice for the same work.

Website maintenance keeps the site and its agreed customer actions working. SEO helps search engines discover and understand useful pages about your business. You may need both, but they are not the same service—and neither should quietly include unlimited new development.

Compare the actual work, not only the name of a plan. A provider may bundle services, but the proposal should still explain what is included, who does it and what requires another quote.

What each service covers

This is a responsibility guide, not a statement that every PleasantWorks care plan includes every task. Only work named in your written scope is included.

On a narrow screen, scroll the table sideways to read every column.

Match the problem to the work

The inquiry form fails. Start with the capture and delivery path. Bringing more visitors to a broken form will not fix that path. The repair may be separate from both a routine check and an SEO audit.

The site works but customers cannot find useful service information. Review whether the right pages exist, explain the actual service and are discoverable through relevant links. With authorized Search Console access, examine available search evidence. Being technically eligible does not guarantee that Google will index or rank a page. Google SEO guidance.

Hours or contact details changed. A small edit may fit a care allowance if the agreement includes it. Adding a new service page with original copy and a different customer journey is a larger content or development task.

You want answers to appear in AI search. Accurate, useful, accessible content remains the foundation. Google says its AI search features do not require special AI files or schema. That is not a promise of inclusion, and it does not turn ordinary maintenance into an AI-search service. Google AI features guidance.

Compare proposals on the same basis

Ask the provider to answer these questions in writing:

  1. Which pages, forms, platforms and integrations are covered?
  2. How often are they checked, and who receives a failure report?
  3. Which repairs and edits are included, and what is the allowance?
  4. Which provider fees, licenses, assets and new content cost extra?
  5. Who can approve a change, and what recovery or rollback is available?
  6. What are the support hours, response commitments and handoff when service ends?

Ask how completed work is recorded. A care report can show a check and its follow-up owner. An SEO audit should connect a finding to evidence, a recommended action and a way to verify the change. A paid invoice, page view or form button click is not evidence of a qualified inquiry.

Keep the term separate from the payment schedule

A three-month service term and a quarterly payment can line up, but they describe different things. A twelve-month term may also use quarterly payments. The agreement should name the start, end, payment schedule and what happens at term end.

PleasantWorks can agree quarterly payment for defined work. Renewal is opt-in and off by default; a continuing invoice should not silently create another service term. Ask for the actual written terms rather than assuming a general guide is your contract.

How PleasantWorks approaches the scope

We start with the systems your website uses. A simple static site does not need the same routine as a CMS or a business-critical form. Website care is optional, with checks, editing and responsibilities sized to an agreed scope. New development and broader content work are separately quoted.

Search foundations and a supervised Discovery Audit are scoped work. Audit findings do not include every fix. Recurring search-management plans and broader AI workflows remain in development; they are not automatically active because a page describes them. No ranking, lead-volume or revenue outcome is guaranteed.
